Around the world there are many surfing destinations located in cold to frigid water temperatures and the advancement in wetsuit technology has opened the way to longer sessions in colder environments. Neoprene has come a long way since its creation back in the 1950's. The constant testing and refinement of neoprene to capture the best possible thermal properties has made surfing a joy in the harshest of conditions.
Choosing a mens winter wetsuit will come down to whether you surf occasionally or are likely to surf frequently all the way through from autumn to spring. If this is the case then a top end wetsuit will be a good investment not only to be as warm as possible but to provide a high level of flexibility that the lesser suits will not provide. The more you spend the more likely the wetsuit will last due to the construction and higher quality of seams that bind the neoprene panels together.
Many features and details are key elements to the construction of a winter wetsuit. The bat wing collar is an extra layer of light weight neoprene that protects the neck entry layer from water penetrating down the collar and into the arch of your back. With the bat wing any water that flows down the collar will be directed out of a drain hole underneath the back zip. A tight hand cuff seal is another feature that prevents cold water from flowing directly into the wetsuit.
Typically wetsuits will have a thicker 5mm layer of neoprene for the chest and back panels and a thinner 3mm layer around the shoulders, arms and legs to improve flexibility. The seams that bind the panels of neoprene together come in different techniques. Flat lock seams is the most basic, while Glued and Blind Stitched Seams offer greater binding strength and flexibility. Fluid seams are the latest technology and adds to the overall thermal properties of a wetsuit.
